Say hello to the new KissKiss Matte Lipsticks ($37 for 0.12 oz.) from French luxury perfume house and beauty brand Guerlain. If YSL's Tatouage Couture is my favorite matte liquid lipstick, then Guerlain's KissKiss Matte is my favorite matte traditional lipstick.

Guerlain was one of the first luxury makeup brands that I got into when I first "discovered" makeup in college, and ever since then it has always held a reputation in my mind for being a reliable source of incredibly high quality, long-lasting foundations for my crazy oily skin. In addition, it's cult favorite Meteorites also quickly became my own holy grail finishing powder for the gorgeous, ethereal, soft-focus finish that they give to my skin which I haven't found in any other finishing powder. And now, I can say that Guerlain also produces one of my favorite lipstick formulas!

The KissKiss Matte lipsticks are billed as being a "hydrating and plumping matte lipstick [that] offers the intensity of a lipstick and the comfort of a balm," and that is exactly what it is. They really remind me of a more pigmented, luxurious version of Glossier's Generation G lipsticks. The texture is incredibly smooth and glides onto the lips beautifully. What makes the KissKiss Mattes unique IMO is their ability to both be highly pigmented and matte with a satiny finish while also not looking like product is on the lips which most matte lipsticks don't do. This is the same reason that I love YSL's Tatouage Couture formula. The Guerlain KissKiss Mattes have a high level of pigmentation and great longevity while also managing to have a sort of weightless, feathery quality that gives the lips a soft and natural look even whilst you're wearing a pigmented lip color.

Additionally, I love the elegant and luxurious, weighty metal packaging that is done in a frosty, soft matte gold...and it doesn't show finger print which makes me love it even more!

Guerlain has done a really outstanding job with its formulation and choices of colors for the KissKiss Matte range, in addition to knocking the formula out of the park. Unlike some other matte lipstick line-ups, the KissKiss Matte range is pretty succinct with only 9 hues. However, out of this small selection there are more favorites for me than there are in some matte ranges with over 20 options to choose from. The colors are all modern and strike a really fine balance between brightness and this difficult to describe softness (this is where they remind me of the Glossier Generation G's) that makes them all look so pretty and sophisticated and perfect for both evening and everyday wear. None of them seem too "bold" to me.

The shade range is as follows:
  • M306 Caliente Beige: nude beige
  • M307 Crazy Nude: rosewood nude
  • M330 Spicy Burgundy: deep ruby red (the only color that I consider "for evening only")
  • M331 Chilli Red: a hot warm red with slight orange tinge (I really wish they would spell it 'chili' instead of 'chilli'...it's bugging me!)
  • M347 Zesty Orange: a hot orange-red
  • M348 Hot Coral: a bright coral pink with a milky look (the only color I consider "for spring and summer only")
  • M375 Flaming Rose: rose pink
  • M376 Daring Pink: warm coral pink with slight red tinge
  • M377 Wild Plum: plummy mauvey-pinkish berry (ignore that it says Wild Rose...I meant to type Wild Plum)

I easily get 12 hour wear from these, and that included eating a philly cheesesteak with onions and provolone on a hero bun which was plenty greasy...there was only minimal wear on the center area of my lips, and it wasn't really noticeable. I didn't reapply, and it didn't look weird or sloppy that I didn't reapply (which is not always the case).

Below are closer-up photos of the lip swatches...I normally call out my favorites, and I will, but I think it's more worth mentioning which ones I don't really like since I really love almost the whole range! I'm not a huge fan of M330 Spicy Burgundy or M348 Hot Coral...the rest I love! And if I had to pick favorites of them all, they would be M347 Zesty Orange and M377 Wild Plum. Loving Wild Plum as much as I do was an unexpected surprise, but it's hands down my favorite berry lipstick ever.

Guerlain's KissKiss Matte lipsticks are a huuuuge love for me! Sephora's VIB Rouge 20% off sale is currently running, and I think VIB and Beauty Insider sales will be continuing to run soon so now is a great time to grab one or more of these for just under $30 a pop! Also available at Nordstrom and any Guerlain counter near you - give me a holler in the comments if you've tried these out and let me whatchu think!

  1. Thanx a lot Georgia for this excellent review, I was waiting for it actually, since I love guerlain products. Since I am considering to buy one online and this line isn't yet present in my country. If I want a Mlbb shade due you recommend the crazy nude or the flaming rose, considering that I own chanel Rouge allure velvet libre (62) which I believe is similar in a way to crazy nude ( the terracotta undertone)...what do u think?

    1. Do glad this review has helped you! Personally I would go for Flaming Rose for a mlbb shade because my lips have more pink in them and I like the freshness the pink hue brings as opposed to the more heavy neutral shade of crazy nude esp if you already have a nude with terra-cotta undertone. Plus you can always make Flaming Rose even more low key by prepping lips with a little lip balm and then dabbing the lipstick on top - it will give a super pretty, very mlbb effect as if it were more of a lip tint not an opaque lipstick. Hope this helps! xx
