Everlane Suede Heel Mule | Review

Everlane Suede Heel Mule Black Mustard Taupe Review Photos Comparison Heel Boot

The Suede Heel Mule ($198) is the latest addition to Everlane's lineup of boots 'n booties, and it couldn't have come at a more perfect time. With fall hot on our heels, this is a heeled bootie that I consider to be a Fall essential, along with the Heel Boot ($235), which comes in regular leather (review here) and suede (review here).

The Suede Heel Mule is available in three hues: taupe, mustard and black. The taupe shade is a nice, neutral "nude", while the mustard is a warm, cognac-hued ochre, and the black is a deep, true, saturated black. Everlane sent me a press sample of the Mustard hue, and I purchased the Taupe and Black shades separately for the purpose of comparison. My usual size 6 is a perfect fit, and since I feel that this shoe is best suited to wearing without heavy socks, I didn't size up. If you want to wear this with thicker socks, probably go up a half size.

The Suede Heel Mule has a fold-down back, similar to the Modern Babo, which is a design that builds in to the shoe a convenience feature that many of us improvise on our own with our shoes anyway. When you wear it folded down, the shoe is a true mule that slips on and off easily. That being said, it doesn't slip off the foot while walking. Once the shoe is on, it stays put very well, which I appreciate!

The back of the shoe can also be folded up, and when worn up, it still slips on and off with great ease, although there is added stability on the foot since the shoe is firmly fixed due to the enclosed back. Either way you wear it, the Suede Heel Mule is extremely comfortable. The suede is soft and flexible,  and the footbed is cushioned and feels very luxurious and cushy to wear.

The Suede Heel Mule is a fantastic transitional shoe since it is so well-suited to almost every ensemble you can imagine. It goes well with shorts, skirts, dresses, jeans, and slacks, and for petite people like myself, it's especially wonderful because the ankle cut means that the shoe doesn't make my legs looks shorter, while the heel gives my legs a lengthening boost!

You will see in my review of the Heel Boot that it can be worn with dresses, but personally, I prefer to wear it exclusively with pants unless paired with black tights, because I do feel like it can make my short legs look a little bit "cut off" with its higher rise above the ankle. The Suede Heel Mule is a solid, wardrobe basic that fills that gap and gives me a perfect autumnal boot to pair effortlessly with all manner of skirts and dresses, in addition to the usual round up of jeans and slacks. I highly recommend grabbing a pair...my personal favourite is the mustard variant, but with three workhorse basic hues, there's something for everyone!

Many thanks to Everlane for sending the Suede Heel Mule for consideration and review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

  1. Hi, was there any breaking-in period as with other Everlane shoes?

    1. Nope! These have been comfy right off the bat - I haven't worn them on any 4 hour walking sprees though, so if you plan to do that I'd be on the safe side and pack a few band aids just in case. But in my wear of these guys so far they have been super comfortable! xx Georgia Grace
